AF: Crypto Chaos in Paris: Kidnappings Target Top Executives

Good morning, my peoples. It’s Tuesday, May 27, 2025. I’m Matt, and this is your Daily Crypto News.

Yesterday I did a live stream while driving — I called it Cars and Crypto, because that’s exactly what it was. Honestly, I had a blast talking about what I love: crypto, cars, politics, and yeah, even cartoons. That got some pushback once, but I’m not stopping.

I’m seriously considering pivoting the Substack to a broader DCN format. That doesn’t mean the podcast changes — this will still be your daily crypto rundown — but the written stuff could branch into Daily Car News, Daily Capitalist News, maybe even Daily Cartoon News if I feel like it. Hit me up in the Substack comments or email me at matt@dailycryptonews.net and let me know what you think. Also, heads up: Kyle’s at the Bitcoin Conference and we’re aiming to go live every day at 4 p.m. Eastern, 1 p.m. Pacific. Could be fun, could be chaos.

Anyway, we’ve got a LOT of ground to cover today, so let’s get into the news.

Crypto Kidnappings in Paris Spark Global Alarm

This one’s wild. French authorities have arrested over a dozen suspects — some minors — tied to two brutal crypto-related kidnappings in Paris. Prosecutors believe these are organized crimes, not random attacks. In one failed attempt, the daughter and grandson of the CEO of Paymium were almost kidnapped in broad daylight. A separate case saw the father of a crypto marketing entrepreneur kidnapped and held for a €5 to €7 million ransom before being rescued by police.

This comes just months after Ledger’s co-founder was also abducted and later rescued. In response, France has amped up security for crypto figures and their families. Some are now hiring bodyguards full-time. ETHCC organizers in Cannes are not taking chances — Vitalik Buterin will reportedly have the same level of protection as Tom Cruise had during the Cannes Film Festival. That’s not hyperbole. There’ll be over 500 cameras and a heavy police presence watching over 8,000 attendees.

Darkwire: Sending Bitcoin Without the Internet

This might be the most underrated innovation in Bitcoin right now. A hackathon project called Darkwire lets you send Bitcoin transactions without an internet connection. It uses long-range radio waves — LoRa — to build a mesh network that can pass Bitcoin transaction data node-to-node until it reaches a connected device that can broadcast it. That means disaster zones, authoritarian regions, and remote areas could all stay connected to Bitcoin — even off-grid.

The tool is still in development, but it’s part of the Bitcoin 2025 hackathon, and the creator — a pseudonymous dev named Cyber — wants to turn it into a standard for off-grid Bitcoin use. Honestly, I can’t believe this didn’t already exist. Big implications.

Robot Boxing is Real Now

China just hosted its first official robot boxing match. Not kidding. It went down during the CMG World Robot Competition Mech Fighting Series, and it was straight out of Real Steel. These humanoid bots, built by Unitree, were throwing punches, kicks, even bouncing back from knockdowns. Operators controlled them ringside, and the final showdown saw “Black” defeat “Green” by decision.

It was shockingly entertaining. We are absolutely heading into a sci-fi sports future, and I’m not mad about it.

Quantum Threats Are Getting Closer

Now this is my favorite story today — and it should be on your radar. Google’s quantum research team just dropped a bombshell. They’ve cut down the estimated resources needed to break RSA encryption by 20x. Instead of needing 20 million qubits, they now estimate it could be done with fewer than one million. And that’s within striking range. IBM’s Condor chip is already at 1,121 qubits. Microsoft’s theoretical Majorana 1 architecture could scale to that level. The arms race is on.

Bitcoin’s 256-bit encryption is still stronger than RSA, but the margin is shrinking. Google has already moved Chrome and internal systems to post-quantum encryption. Ethereum and Solana are preparing for quantum resistance too — expect hard forks in the next few years. It’s becoming clear that quantum-resistance is a matter of “when,” not “if.”

Here’s the danger: once quantum computing is powerful enough, every wallet that hasn’t been updated will be vulnerable. Lost wallets, Satoshi’s stash, inactive coins — all of it could be up for grabs. So when that hard fork comes, you’d better update. And as we discussed recently with David, we're in “harvest now, hack later” mode. They're scraping all the data they can and just waiting for the tools to catch up.

The $300K Bitcoin Bet That Won’t Die

Traders are still piling into the $300K June 27th call option on Deribit, which now has over $600 million in open interest. That’s a 3x move in less than a month. It’s a lottery ticket, and I get it — the upside is insane. But let’s be real: unless something absolutely earth-shattering drops — like the U.S. dollar gets backed by Bitcoin next week — this isn’t happening. Not impossible, but wildly improbable.

Bitcoin Conference Watch and Price Predictions

The Bitcoin Conference kicks off in just a couple hours. J.D. Vance is speaking tomorrow morning. We’re expecting the usual suspects: Cynthia Lummis, Michael Saylor, maybe a few surprises. But unless Tim Cook walks on stage and says Apple’s putting Bitcoin on the balance sheet, it’ll probably be another round of “wait and see.”

I’m sticking to my prediction: we’ll see a pre-conference pump, and then a post-conference correction. Nothing major is likely to drop, and when that happens, the hype drains out fast. I think we’ll dip into the 90s again. Maybe even touch $93K before bouncing back up.
