Wikipedia traffic slips as AI eats the clicks
-8% traffic (May → Aug ’25) after de-botting, as chatbots/search increasingly answer inline without sending users out.
Pew: ~60% of Google searches end with no click. Publishers warn of revenue risk; AI-written pieces nearing ~½ of new content.
Wikipedia’s response: tighter attribution and new outreach (YouTube, TikTok).
My take: The open web trained the bots; now the bots keep the traffic. Attribution + licensing frameworks are going to be a much bigger story in 2026.
NY bill would tax PoW miners’ electricity use
Assembly Bill A91382: up to $0.05/kWh surtax over 20M kWh usage; renewable-powered miners exempt.
Backers say it funds affordability & compensates “grid strain.” Critics say it will push miners out. Proposed start: Jan 1, 2027.
Mini-rant cliff notes: “Fair share” is paying your bill. If the grid is strained, build more capacity and fix ~8% T&D losses before taxing paying customers. If emissions are the concern: nuclear/solar/wind + off-peak/curtailed power.
Context: where electricity actually goes
Motors (pumps/fans/compressors/conveyors): ~53% of global electricity (~15,000 of ~28,500 TWh).
Lighting: ~2,900 TWh.
T&D losses & curtailment: ~2,400 TWh (~8%).
Space cooling: ~2,100 TWh.
Water sector: ~1,000 TWh.
Aluminum smelting: ~900 TWh.
Standby “vampire loads”: 330–650 TWh (5–10%).
Data centers (everything, excl. crypto): ~415 TWh.
Bitcoin: ~138 TWh, now >50% renewable/nuclear coverage via siting near cheap/curtailed generation.
My take: If you’re hunting emissions at the margin, idle waste and losses beat dunking on workloads that already chase cheap/clean energy.
MEV caper: the 12-second “Amakasi” exploit
Two MIT-trained brothers allegedly abused MEV-Boost as validators to siphon $25M from automation bots (“Amakasi”).
Charges: wire fraud & money laundering (up to 20 years each).
Flashbots patched the vuln within 24 hours. Defense: legal gray area.
My take: Validator-level games are the new “edge.” The industry reaction time (24h patch) is the bigger win here.
TraderCobb: zoom out to the monthly
Cobb’s read (highlights):
The flash-crash nuked a lot of weekly structure — it’s messy.
Watching daily BTC: needs to set a higher low/higher high (e.g., reclaim >116k) to confirm the uptrend.
The monthly remains strong: pullbacks into the 10/20 MAs are normal bull-market behavior. BTC could even visit 90k and still look fine on monthly structure.
Macro/catalysts: Oct 22 meeting with Senate Dems (Schumer + co) and a lineup of industry leaders (Coinbase, Ripple, Chainlink, Galaxy, Kraken, Uniswap, Circle). Armstrong keeps repeating: “clear rules are coming.”
With rates drifting lower / QE odds rising, Cobb’s stance: bullish bias on higher timeframes, trade what’s in front of you, keep emotions out.
“Get perspective. Now is not the time to panic — it’s the time to be focused.”
